Fertile Egg White Cervical Mucus (EWCM) While on Clomid
Clomid or Clomiphene Citrate, if you’re fancy, is a great medication for women who suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and other underlying ovulation issues to take if they need a little extra help getting pregnant.
What I find ironic about Clomid is that one of the side effects is vaginal dryness and or super thick EWCM1Marchini M, Dorta M, Bombelli F, Ruspa M, Campana A, Dolcetta G, Radici E. Effects of clomiphene citrate on cervical mucus: analysis of some influencing factors. Int J Fertil. 1989 Mar-Apr;34(2):154-9. PMID: 2565319. – which you NEED to get pregnant.
The lack of cervical mucus, the semens vessel of travel (see what I did there SEMEN, Vessel – like a boat, lame? Yea, okay moving on!!) through the hazardous, acidic waste that is the vagina is all of a sudden gone. You’ve got the egg, but no way for the sperm to get there.
See the irony?
Clomid tricks the body into believing your estrogen levels are low, which in turn makes your pituitary gland say “Um no! We need to fix this!”.
So, your pituitary gland goes to work pumping out follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) and BAM your ovaries get to work ramping up egg production and you ovulate (in theory, unfortunately, Clomid does not work for everyone).
Then you have sex like a maniac and you get pregnant! And the crowd goes WILD! Clomid wins the game!
Well, that’s how it is supposed to work at least.
But, you see your body actually uses estrogen to make cervical mucus (CM) and now you’re taking a pill that just throws it all out of whack.
Again, boggles my mind!
Anywho, so now we need to come up with ways to increase egg white cervical mucus (EWCM) to make sure that sperm can find that egg Clomid has worked too hard at tricking your body to release!
How to Naturally Increase Fertile Cervical Mucus (CM) While Taking Clomid
The good news is that there are several things you can do to increase your EWCM that are natural, and won’t interfere with Clomid. From supplements to sperm-friendly lube that mimics CM without harming a single tail on the little guys.
You also may have been directed to try cough medication that contains Guaifenesin to help thin out your EWCM – but I wouldn’t. While it has proven effective in studies for some women (and men too2Means G, Berry-Cabán CS, Hammermeuller K. Guaifenesin and increased sperm motility: a preliminary case report. Int J Gen Med. 2010;4:13-14. Published 2010 Dec 20. doi:10.2147/IJGM.S14585) it comes with its own set of side effects.
Before we really dive into this I just want to add to please make sure to talk to your physician before you start any supplements.
Even natural products can interact with certain medications, like evening primrose oil or EPO.
Some natural supplements have been known to interact with blood pressure medication, blood thinners and SSRI’s etc. Do your research and check your meds before starting any supplements.
Should you use Mucinex (Guaifenesin) or Robitussin cough syrup to increase Cervical Mucus with Clomid?
Scenario – You just found out that Clomid was going to take your CM production from a full-throttle roar to an inaudible hum and you can’t have that!
Like any devoted TTCer, you went straight to your go-to TTC forum and the girls there said “Hey take Mucinex (Guaifenesin) or Robitussin to increase cervical mucus, it works!” – and now you’re considering it because what wouldn’t we do to see that BFP? Am I right?
Well, maybe, just maybe you will reconsider doing this.
I am not going to deny that it can work and does work for some, but I am not for it. There is no evidence that it actually increases EWCM what it does is thin it out.
If Clomid is causing vaginal dryness then you can’t “thin out” CM that isn’t there – you need to be looking at products that are going to help you actually increase cervical mucus.
This is my opinion so do with it what you will…
Being a naturopath I personally try not to take any pharmaceutical medications if possible, only when necessary.
Can’t ovulate? Got PCOS? Want to get pregnant? Then Clomid is absolutely necessary, the benefits outweigh the risks and I am all for it.
Taking Mucinex to increase cervical mucus, eh I don’t feel like that falls under the same category.
There are too many natural “remedies” available that work to bump up CM production to take Mucinex or Robittusin with the sole purpose of increasing EWCM.
Some of the side-effects of Guailfensein include kidney stones3Bennett S, Hoffman N, Monga M. Ephedrine- and guaifenesin-induced nephrolithiasis. J Altern Complement Med. 2004 Dec;10(6):967-9. doi: 10.1089/acm.2004.10.967. PMID: 15673990. dizziness, nausea, headache, and allergic reaction.
But, the real problem for me is that Mucinex can cross the placental barrier and can increase the risk of an inguinal hernia during a baby’s development in the first trimester. 4https://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/08/prweb550005.htm
What if you don’t know that you’re already pregnant? How long does the drug really last in your system? Do you risk it when you can use lubes, and try other safer, natural options?
These are all questions that you need to ask yourself and your healthcare provider to decide if it’s right for you and your family.
If you do decide to go ahead and try it out make sure you get the Mucinex that is marked as an Expectorant and ONLY contains Guailfensein. Like this one –
Alright, enough of that – let’s get to what you CAN do to increase your EWCM to work with Clomid and get that BFP! Hazzah!
1. Go Lube or Go Dry! Use Sperm-Friendly Lube to Mimic Cervical Mucus When Clomid Has You Dryer Than the Sahara
Sperm-friendly Fertility lube is a great alternative to use when your body isn’t producing enough CM on its own.
It is pH balanced perfectly, matches the consistency of EWCM, and is strong enough to keep those swimmers safe on their journey to the egg.
When shopping around for one make sure you get one that is clearly marked as fertility-friendly. All lubes are not created equal and can actually inhibit sperm motility and kill them off, even if it’s not spermicidal.
I am not going to go into too much detail on it as I have a whole post on it here that you can read if you’re interested.
Long story short get a lube like Pre-Seed, Conceive Plus, or Baby Dance. I recommend going with one that has applicators included, you want to shoot the lube as close to your cervix as possible so it is there and ready to incase the sperm.
2. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Can Increase CM AND help with FSH Levels! BONUS!
If there is one supplement you pick up from this whole post make it Omega 3!
Not only does it increase cervical mucus it can help women with PCOS regulate their cycles5Nadjarzadeh A, Dehghani Firouzabadi R, Vaziri N, Daneshbodi H, Lotfi MH, Mozaffari-Khosravi H. The effect of omega-3 supplementation on androgen profile and menstrual status in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A randomized clinical trial. Iran J Reprod Med. 2013;11(8):665-672., improve egg quality6Nehra D, Le HD, Fallon EM, et al. Prolonging the female reproductive lifespan and improving egg quality with dietary omega-3 fatty acids. Aging Cell. 2012;11(6):1046-1054. doi:10.1111/acel.12006 and lower FSH levels to help with ovulation!7Al-Safi ZA, Liu H, Carlson NE, Chosich J, Harris M, Bradford AP, Robledo C, Eckel RH, Polotsky AJ. Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation Lowers Serum FSH in Normal Weight But Not Obese Women. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2016 Jan;101(1):324-33. doi: 10.1210/jc.2015-2913. Epub 2015 Nov 2. PMID: 26523525; PMCID: PMC4701838.
It also is AMAZING for men. It helps with sperm motility and overall quality8Safarinejad MR, Safarinejad S. The roles of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in idiopathic male infertility. Asian J Androl. 2012;14(4):514-515. doi:10.1038/aja.2012.46
Seriously, you can not go wrong with adding an omega 3 to your TTC Arsenal.
I take Swanson High Concentrate Omega-3, every day and don’t have any problems with burping fish.
Don’t do fish? No Problem! You can get Omega 3 Fatty Acid in Vegan form, I recommend Freshfield Vegan Omega 3 DHA Supplement.
3. Try an L-Arginine Supplement To Increase CM
L-Arginine is an amino acid that synthesizes nitric oxide, a naturally occurring chemical in the body the supports several functions including, you guessed it EWCM production.
Nitric oxide is fundamental to the reproductive system. It helps increase circulation to the vagina and uterus which in turn bumps up cervical mucus production.
A study found that women with PCOS that used Clomid and L-Arginine together had a “significant increase in the ovulation and pregnancy rates”!9Mahran A, Abdelmeged A, Shawki H, Moheyelden A, Ahmed AM. Nitric oxide donors improve the ovulation and pregnancy rates in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome treated with clomiphene citrate: A RCT. Int J Reprod Biomed. 2016;14(1):9-14.
Which, if you ask me is super exciting!!!
AND as an added bonus it has also been said that it can give you better orgasms and increase your sex drive. (Yes, Please!)
PS. It also helps with sperm motility and production.10David W. Keller, Kenneth L. Polakoski, L-Arginine Stimulation of Human Sperm Motility in vitro, Biology of Reproduction, Volume 13, Issue 2, 1 September 1975, Pages 154–157, https://doi.org/10.1095/biolreprod13.2.154 (If you have to take all these supplements it can’t hurt for him to take some too!)
I like Swanson’s L-Arginine Supplement –
4. Use FertileCM to help Improve Cervical Mucus
FertileCM is a supplement specifically designed to help increase EWCM.
It has L-Arginine in it as well as N-Acetyl-L Cysteine, Coral Calcium, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, and Vitamin C. All of which help support CM production.
FertileCM is manufactured by Fairhaven Health. They have a whole line of fertility support supplements for women and men.
They are a well-known, trusted brand and a good option if you just want to take one all-encompassing supplement.
On a side note, it may be worth looking into pairing their Ovulation Boost supplement with Clomid and FertileCM to help trigger ovulation and increase CM.
5. Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) to boost your CM output
Evening Primrose oil comes from a plant named, you guessed it Evening Primrose (Oenothera Biennis if you’re fancy). The oil is cold-pressed from the plant’s seeds and is used for a variety of different health reasons, one being to improve fertility.
The oil contains gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), linoleic acid (LA) Omega 3, and Omega 6. It’s the GLA that makes it a go-to supplement for increasing cervical mucus.
When ingested the body converts GLA into prostaglandins a hormone that helps repair the body internally and helps with the production of EWCM.
A word of caution when using EPO –
- It does interact with medications so you need to check with your doctor and make sure it’s safe for you to take. Prostaglandins affect/control blood flow, blood clots, and are a part of labor. Which, is why it is important to consult your physician before starting EPO.
- Only take EPO from CD1 (Cycle day 1) through ovulation it can cause contractions (why it’s so popular to kick to labor).
If you get the all-clear from your doc then I recommend Swansons Evening Primrose Oil.
6. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate – Hey did I mention HYDRATE?!
Cervical mucus is made up of 90% water – 90%!
You need to be drinking at least half of your body weight a day in water, ideally, you should shoot for 100oz a day. If you have a hard time keeping up with your water intake getting a reusable water bottle that has ounce and time reminders may help. I like this one.
Besides – once you get that BFP the recommend daily amount for pregnant women hits 1 gallon a day.
By starting your water regiment now not only are you going to increase your cervical mucus you are getting your body ready for carrying your bundle of joy.
It’s a win-win!
7. Eat EWCM Boosting Foods
We all know that a good diet is important when it comes to getting enough vitamins and minerals, but it is especially important when you’re trying to conceive.
Since Clomid makes your body think you’re low on estrogen you can up your intake of Flaxseed.
Flaxseed is full of phytoestrogens, a chemical found in plants called lignans. Lignans have been reported to mimic estrogen and since estrogen is the main component in producing CM adding flaxseed to your diet could help increase EWCM.
You can add ground flaxseed to smoothies, oatmeal, cookies, and yogurt. It has a light nutty taste and really when you add it to most things you can’t taste it.
If you don’t want to add it to your food there is a supplement you can take called Flaxseed Oil.
Dark Leafy Greens
Green veggies are all the rage now and for a good reason – they are full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and they help alkalize the body.
Try and eat at least 1 cup of green vegetables a day, when you’re making dinner ask yourself “What are we having that is green today?”
For the days that you just can’t seem to get in your greens, you can look for a powder supplement to add to smoothies or drink it on its own.
This one is iffy for me, but I thought I would include it as most other resources on the web will tell you to try and drink Grapefruit juice to increase CM.
Grapefruit is notoriously known for messing with prescription medication as it contains chemicals called furanocoumarins (phew, that’s a mouth full).
Furanocou….. whatever that word is, disables an enzyme found in the liver called CYP3A4 which is used to break down estrogen.
The idea behind grapefruit working to increase cervical mucus is that since the body is unable to breakdown estrogen it temporarily raises estrogen levels in the body which then ramps up EWCM production.
There are not any studies on this that I can provide and I actually am wary of recommending the combo of Clomid and Grapefruit.
I FEEL like it may interact with the Clomid since it does block estrogen absorption. You may end up hindering the effects of the Clomid on your quest to increase CM.
Bottom line – ask your pharmacist what they think or consult your physician.
Now Get Out There & Ramp Up That CM Production
Alright, ladies, all that’s left to do now is try some of the above – or all of it! Just remember to check with your doctor before starting any of the major supplements.
If you only take three things away from this post I would suggest it be starting an Omega 3, Getting Pre-Seed, and staying Hydrated.
Those are the things that I would start with personally if I was trying to increase my cervical mucus while on Clomid.
Well, and I would be adding Flax and the green stuff to my diet. If I did not see an improvement after the first month then I would go on to try some of the other stuff like FertileCM.
Just remember that Mucinex is only going to help you thin out your EWCM – it’s not going to increase your EWCM and that’s what most women need to do while on Clomid so try and avoid it if you can.
